* The above list shows the 10 Provinces of Canada with the date each entered the Confederation. The map below shows their capitals. Canada has a complicated history, none more so than Labrador which was owned by (the island of) Newfoundland, then by Quebec; it was re-annexed by Newfoundland in 1809. On December 6, 2001, the Canadian Constitution was amended to change the name of Newfoundland to Newfoundland and Labrador. French is the official language of Quebec; English and French are the official languages of New Brunswick. The official language of the other 8 is English. Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Yukon are Territories. The extremely sparsely populated Nunavat has been a Territory since only April 1, 1999.
