* Hercules is also known as Heracles, the former being the most popular, hence the adjective Herculean. His labours are listed above in order; the best known of them is cleaning the Augean Stables, something he was charged with doing in a single day. This has become a metaphor for rooting out corruption, something which usually takes a lot longer.
