The 2 Moons Of Mars

1. Deimos
2. Phobos

Most people know Mars was the Roman God of War; the Greek equivalent is Ares. Both its moons were discovered by the American astronomer Asaph Hall in 1877. Both are very small: Deimos has a diameter of around 12.4km, Phobos of around 22.5km. Contrast this with our own Moon which has a diameter of around 3,475km. Deimos and Phobos are named after Greek deities. Deimos, the first to be discovered, is named after the god of terror and dread while Phobos is named after the god of fear (panic, flight and rout).
