* The above are the English horse races known as the Classics, listed in chronological order; they are all flat races. The Derby is also known as the Derby Stakes or the Epsom Derby and is the most prestigious. It is open to 3 year old colts and fillies. The Saint Ledger is the longest of the five; it is run over 1 mile 6 furlongs, 132 yards. The 1,000 Guineas is open only to 3 year old fillies; the 2,000 Guineas is open to year old colts and fillies. A horse that comes first in the 2,000 Guineas, the Derby and the Saint Ledger is said to have won the Triple Crown.
