The 5 Boroughs Of New York

* New York started as Fort Amsterdam in 1625. As the settlement expanded it became New Amsterdam, and was renamed New York on September 24, 1664 when it was ceded to England. It is often called New York City to distinguish it from New York State, of which it is a part (but not the capital).

The City of New York came into existence officially on January 1, 1898, as did the 5 Boroughs. John F. Kennedy International Airport and LaGuardia Airport – shown in brown on the map – are located in Queens.

1. Manhattan (New York County)
2. Brooklyn (Kings County)
3. Queens (Queens County)
4. The Bronx (Bronx County)
5. Staten Island (Richmond County)
