* The 6 States of New England are listed above in alphabetical order; they have a complicated history. Connecticut Colony was founded around 1636 and joined in forming the New England Confederation in 1643, but the State came into existence only on January 9, 1788, the 5th of the original 13 States to join the Union. Maine was part of Massachusetts until June 19, 1819 and became part of the Union on March 15, 1820. Massachusetts joined the Union on February 6, 1788. Rhode Island was founded May 4, 1776, New Hampshire on January 5, 1776, and Vermont on March 4, 1791.
