* Mercia covers what is now Middle England (ie the Midlands). The name Northumbria still exists but the area is now basically Northumberland and Durham. Wessex was the Kingdom of the West Saxons; it covered approximately what is now Dorset, Hampshire (including the Isle of Wight), Somerset, Surrey and Wiltshire. In 1974, Sussex was split into East Sussex and West Sussex.
