* The above list of Crusades to the Holy Land is by no means definitive. Britannica on-line lists 8 Crusades with the first one starting in 1096 but the History Today website says it was called by Pope Urban II at Clermont in November 1095. The 9th Crusade, also known as Lord Edward’s Crusade, has been called an extension of the 8th Crusade. There were also a number of smaller Crusades including the Children’s Crusade of 1212.
