KELLI SHAWN MAGUIRE — two-time teen false accuser

Circa July 1994: At Lighthouse Point, Florida, the 16 year old Kelli Maguire tells her parents she has been raped by a co-worker at a fast food restaurant. Naturally they take her to the police; eventually Kelli admits the sex was consensual.

In 1997, she is living in Pompano Beach; on July 28, she spends the night with her boyfriend against the wishes of her parents. So naturally, the following day, she tells them she was abducted at gunpoint and raped. In spite of the previous false claim, her parents believe her - as they should - but not uncritically. The police are called in, and a thorough investigation is carried out.

The suspect is said to be a black male driving a purple truck. The abduction was said to have occurred on a busy street around 12.30pm (on July 29), but no one saw anything. After the police learn of her previous false allegation, she is asked to take a polygraph test. Her final story appears to have been that while waiting for a bus, a stranger offered her a ride, she smoked marijuana with him, then “offered him sexual favors in exchange for a ride home”.

She is charged with filing a false report.

According to Sergeant Carol Maynard, head of the Broward Sheriff’s Office Sex Crimes Unit, she sees similar false rape reports by teenagers once or twice a month. She also makes an interesting observation; while all reports are treated as genuine, even if the suspicion is that a particular one is not:

“Usually the pieces of the case will not be coming together and the victim will either recant her story or suddenly be uninterested in prosecution”.
