But I looked around,
And I saw the Devil
And his agents grow fat and prosperous
Wherever there was none.
I looked around
And I saw little wife-beating
And less child-battering
Amongst the upper classes,
And no armed robberies
Nor burglaries at all
Perpetrated by the duke and his men,
And I saw very few rich men who murdered for money.
They told me money couldn’t buy happiness,
But I looked around,
And though I saw many people
Who were both rich and unhappy,
I saw many more who were rich and happy,
And many who were happy because they were rich.
And I saw many more who were poor and unhappy,
And I saw very few who were poor and happy,
And none at all who were happy because they were poor...
