Stepping Stones

A tiny hop
From stop to stop,
The smallest step, but lo!

With willing hearts
Their journey starts,
So onward do they go.

A bigger jump
From hump to hump,
Momentum building up,

Look on with glee
As tort’rously
Refills the hungry cup.

Another rung:
(Too long unsung),
The heroes’ hearts grow gladder;

Their shy account
Begins to mount
As they ascend the ladder.

They start to leap,
And thence to reap
Rewards of labours done,

Thus stepping stones
Of dead men’s bones
Ensure their cause is won.
