The Theory Of The Theory

A theory doesn’t have to be correct,
The only thing it must do is explain,
It may take years or decades to perfect,
And half a minute to flush down the drain.
A theory isn’t meant to gloss or gild,
It’s not a paint or varnish but a glue,
And, if it’s reasoned well, then you can build
Upon its foundations without ague.
But if at any stage you find decay,
Cut out the part that doesn’t seem to fit,
Or failing that, sweep the whole thing away,
And resolutely think no more of it.
A misleading theory is like a wall
That bars Man’s progress...better none at all.
